Pastor Keith Henick continues our study of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, Chapter 26, “Of the Church.” This is part two of our four-part study, covering paragraphs 5–8.
This lesson examines the local church as an expression of Christ’s power:
His act of calling — Christ calls His people through the power of the gospel.
His act of institution — Those called by Christ are responsible to join together as local churches.
His act of order — Christ gives His churches the authority necessary to obey His commands and practice biblical discipline.
His act of government — Christ appoints qualified officers to oversee and care for His churches.
We will also consider three central responsibilities of the church:
To preach the true gospel
To portray the gospel through the ordinances
To protect the gospel through church discipline
Primary texts include John 10:14–16, 29; 1 Corinthians 1:2; Matthew 18:17–18; 1 Timothy 3:1; and Acts 20:28.
Join us as we consider how Christ calls, gathers, orders, governs, and preserves His churches according to His Word.
