Marriage is under attack in our culture, but the confusion didn’t begin in our generation. This week we’ll continue our study through the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession of Faith, examining Chapter 25: Of Marriage.
Together we’ll answer questions such as:
• Why did God ordain marriage?• Why does the confession begin with one man and one woman?• What does “mutual help” actually mean?• Why are Christians commanded to marry “only in the Lord”?• Why does the 1689 omit most of the Westminster Confession’s section on divorce?• What was happening historically that shaped the framers’ language?• What does Scripture teach about marriage, family, and God’s created order?
We’ll also explore the historical background of the English Reformation, the influence of Rome’s sacramental view of marriage, and why the Particular Baptists framed this chapter the way they did—all while carefully walking through the biblical texts supporting each paragraph of the confession.
