Seagulls Gather | The Chimes by Charles Dickens Book Review @SeagullsGather | Uploaded December 2021 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
My book review of The Chimes. Dickens' follow up to 'The Christmas Carol', The Chimes treads much the same path - the redemption of Toby 'Trotty' Veck a man from a poor family who begins to believe that the poor are irredeemable. The chiming of the church bells nearby were previous a comfort to Toby but, as he begins to doubt, he sees goblins and spirits pouring forth from them to influence mankind. The spirits of the bells turn on Trotty for doubting mankind and show him visions of the future, will they be enough to save his family from the dark future he sees?
This 1844 novella is considered one of Dickens’ Christmas books but actually takes place at new year. The Chimes was a huge commercial success but is not as well remembered as its predecessor.
