Seagulls Gather | Realism vs The Gothic: Lady Audley's Secret and The Beetle @SeagullsGather | Uploaded May 2023 | Updated October 2024, 19 hours ago.
This video explorers how the genres of Realism and The Gothic interact in victorian novels. While it focuses on Mary Elizabeth Braddon's sensation classic Lady Audley's Secret (1862) and Richard Marsh's supernatural thriller The Beetle (1897) it also considers North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot's Adam Bede among others.
While the Realist movement was intended to shed off the influence of the Gothic and focus on 'the Real' it is shown how authors embraced the styles of one to accentuate the themes of the other.
My books, the British sci-fi comedy Professor Lovecraft, are now available on Amazon here: cutt.ly/W9GeO37
