The duo of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter were very fond of Christmas songs, and this was one of their first recordings of an original Christmas song written by Richard and their professor Frank Pooler of California State University. The single was released in 1970 but did not chart in the USA; instead, it went to #45 on the UK Pop chart. "Merry Christmas Darling" was re-recorded for the Carpenters' "Christmas Portrait" album in 1978 and was remixed in 2018 with additional instrumentation by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Of all the versions, I still prefer this original single version that was released in 1970.
