Low stomach acid is one of the most missed drivers of bloating and I look for heavy, red meat protein = bloating to be a cue!
HCl aka hydrochloric acid aka stomach acid is there to break protein down and trigger the rest of digestion. If it’s low digestion slows, protein doesn’t get properly broken down, it lingers, ferments and feeds the wrong bugs.
That’s where gas (particularly smelly rotten egg gas) bloating, and that heavy “brick in the stomach” feeling comes from.
If someone tells me they feel worse after protein then low stomach acid is top of the list straight away.
