One of the symptoms that can make me think Candida is a strange permanent hangover feeling. Brain fog, fatigue, headaches, nausea and most specifically becoming incredibly intolerant to alcohol can all fit into this fungal overgrowth picture. One reason for this unusual presentation is acetaldehyde.
Most people know acetaldehyde as a byproduct of alcohol break down and is a huge contributor to the hangover. Candida can also produce acetaldehyde. When I connect with a patient in the clinic and they have all the signs of candida overgrowth PLUS they tells me they feel hungover despite barely drinking or that even a tiny amount of alcohol leaves them feeling terrible Candida moves to the top of my list of things worth investigating.
Histamine breakdown can also produce acetaldehyde which makes the overlap with histamine intolerance particularly interesting. Poor alcohol tolerance on its own certainly doesn't mean Candida BUT when it sits alongside brain fog, fatigue, bloating, the fermenting gut acetaldehyde helps to connect the dots.
