When things are hidden away in drawers or boxes, they stop existing in any meaningful way. Out of sight genuinely means out of mind, and for sewing projects that means things get abandoned.
Thrifted baskets solved this for me almost entirely. Large floor baskets corral the bulky items that don't have an obvious home, like: printed patterns, fabric waiting to be cut, anything that would otherwise end up stacked somewhere and forgotten. Smaller baskets hung on the wall hold works in progress in a way that keeps them present and accessible without taking up any surface space. Everything stays contained!
