Sewing your own clothes gives you something ready-to-wear never can: the ability to make one specific change that makes a pattern work for your actual body. The Chelsea jeans are my clearest example of this.

As drafted, the flare starts below the knee. For my proportions that placement doesn't work as well I need the flare to start above the knee and flow straight from the hip. That's it. That's the whole modification. But the difference in how the finished pants look and feel on my body is significant enough that I've now made three pairs.
