Denim has a reputation for being difficult, and honestly it's not entirely undeserved. But most of the frustration comes from a few fixable mistakes, not the fabric itself.
Here's what actually makes the difference:
- Match your needle size to your fabric weight: 90/14 for lightweight, 100/16 for midweight, 110/18 or higher for heavyweight.
- Use a fresh rotary blade for every project because denim dulls them fast.
- Pre-wash everything — denim can shrink up to 10% and bleed dye badly.
- Lengthen your stitch to around 3mm to prevent puckering.
- Press with your highest heat setting and a wooden clapper for seams that actually lie flat
