A year after the University of Texas at Austin fielded a football team, Texas A&M University did the same. With a 38–0 victory for the Texas Longhorns on October 19, a rivalry between the state's two oldest public universities commenced. The teams played every year from 1915 to 2011, when Texas A&M moved to the Southeastern Conference. State legislators from both parties introduced bills requiring the schools to revive the game, but the Thanksgiving tradition would not resume until Texas joined the same conference in 2024. Athletic competitions between the schools, no matter the sport, are dubbed the Lone Star Showdown.
