When San Angelo held the first Fiesta del Concho in 1973, the citywide celebration encompassed 10 days of entertainment, including a tractor-pulling contest and a boat regatta on Twin Buttes Lake. Succeeding years would introduce—and sometimes discontinue—a variety of other events, from hot air balloon rides to daredevil jumps across the Concho River. This 1989 episode of The Eyes of Texas highlights a sheep shearing contest at Fort Concho. (San Angelo was once known as the Inland Wool Capital of the World, with its livestock auction still one of the largest for sheep and goats in the nation.) Fiesta del Concho ended in 1999, but the recently revived River Fest continues many of Fiesta's cherished traditions.
