Named for German-Jewish political writer and activist Karl Ludwig Börne, Boerne was one of several Central Texas colonies settled by German "Forty-Eighters"—European revolutionaries exiled for their support of liberal principles like democratic governance and the abolition of slavery. More than 150 years after its founding, the city pays tribute to its German roots through historic downtown buildings, restaurants and breweries, and annual cultural celebrations. Running from 1967 to 2019, Berges Fest was a three-day event featuring a parade, organ and band concerts, and a German costume contest. This 1970s promotional film segment highlights the various carnival games on offer. The COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to the festival, but Berges Fest returned in 2024 as the Das Festival and Parade.
