El Paso residents have ushered in the new year with the Southwestern Sun Carnival since 1936. (The Sun Bowl began the previous year.) While modern celebrations focus on the parade and football game, the annual tradition encompasses a variety of civic and sporting activities. This promotional film segment highlights a few of the 29 events happening at the 1974 festival, including the coronation of the Sun Queen and a college basketball tournament hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso.
