By the 1960s, Luckenbach had turned from one of the oldest trading posts in Gillespie County into a near ghost town, prompting retired postmaster Benno Engel to list the tiny hamlet for sale. Folklorist Hondo Crouch, actor Guich Koock, and rancher Kathy Morgan purchased Luckenbach for $30,000 in 1971. The trio of Texas characters subsequently transformed the nearly abandoned town into a diverting destination for casual frivolity, from the Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned Chili Cook-off to the Mud Dauber Festival. This segment from Jackelope (1976) joins artist Bob Wade at the annual Luckenbach World's Fair. Running from 1973 to 1981, the event featured live music, contests in chicken flying and tobacco spitting, and an art show.
