During our conversation on my @drlouisenewsonpodcast this week, my guest @demisantanabrown showed me the results of an online testosterone blood test she'd taken, and the result said 'good' when the result was actually very low.
Testosterone results can cause confusion for women and clinicians alike. Many of the women I've consulted with at my @newson.health clinic have been previously told that their testosterone level was 'normal,' when in fact it was low or even undetectable, and despite having clear symptoms of testosterone deficiency they were told they wouldn't benefit from being prescribed testosterone.
Part of the problem is that testosterone doesn't have an internationally agreed reference range the way many other blood tests do, and laboratories often end up using whatever range the test manufacturer recommends rather than one that's been properly validated for women.
