When he was found in 2015, Mata was hiding under banana leaves in a burned, blackened landscape. His forest was gone due to fires earlier that year. There were no tall trees left, no safe shelter, and barely any food. In the dramatic footage, he runs from rescuers because he thinks he is in danger. But the real danger was the fire that had already destroyed his home.
Mata was rescued in a joint operation between our partners, YIARI, and BKSDA West Kalimantan.
