The 1991 Telenet jRPG released as part of a two game collection from the same people who recently brought over the Cosmic Fantasy Collection and Valis Collections.
The setting looks generic at first, but being based in the UK and Ireland with Celtic mythology as Christianity was coming to the fore is a pretty unique setting. Combat wise it has your basic stuff with buffs/debuffs becoming pretty important in boss battles, otherwise you probably just want to use MP for Healing. I didn't find myself needing items until the final dungeon, and never had to grind in one particular spot - and was running quite a bit in certain dungeons to boot.
Talking to NPCs is how to progress a lot of the time, and the Notes system helps keep track of key term. The game is fairly linear and only slightly before you get the Airship do you ever really have multiple locations available.
The story follows Cael and his wife-to-be Claire as they set off to receive the King's blessing to be wed, and quickly turns into a fight against the Lucifer and his Demon Generals with some twists along the way.
I'll give timestamps for dungeons/bosses and for the location of the Four Crosses - which is when the game is more open.
Secret River Passage early on was the first longish dungeon, purely because Cael was on his own, so I went to the inn after the first puzzle element then back in for the second.
Luckily for the next dungeon, I had a Mage companion with a decent MP pool and healing, although upon first entering I realised I needed new equipment, and it wasn't until the 4th entry (timestamp) that I was able to get through the symbol puzzle after realising where I needed to go.
In Bangoa Tower it's another puzzle to complete, and you also have to go into the basement after rescuing Claire, which I didn't realise on my first run through. On the second run through I scoured everything including the pointless outer area before.
Glastonbury Hill is thankfully not too long, thankfully because I take the correct path last, and Zito doesn't return until you beat the boss here.
I pretty much do the same in Cave to Wymondam too, with the area I get drawn to not necessary until a revisit after you're prompted by story in the next town. In Wymondam you'll notice a big Cross on top of the hill (you may have noticed the one in the water in Portsmouth Canal too). Remember this for later.
You'll then venture into the N and parts of Scotland (Alva) and eventually be prompted to a Cave. Then you'll begin the arc of the two mirrors and four crosses before you can face off with Lucifer.
Durza's Key in Cambell is needed to open a door to one of the Crosses. Harris Village to the NW of Scotland is where you get the Airship. The first mystery after this is in Chapiot Castle, where you have to return children from a Fairy Realm and get the Whisper of Angel.
You get told about the first cross in Portsmouth, thankfully. Drain the canal and activate it. The rest take me a while to discover, so check time stamps.
After this head to the Shrine in the centre of the 4 and you'll be funnelled to the end of the game and get Cael's Ultimate Gear in the Heavenly realm, where you'll also meet Claire's Mother.
When you get the improved Airship stock up on multihealing food and revives and head for the final dungeon, where you'll face non improved bosses and weak Spider boss, then Lucifer himself before you watch the not so unexpected ending.
As for when I'll play 2 and 3? Probably later this year, maybe Autumn time.
