The English born Mexican artist, novelist, and political activist Leonora Carrington (1917 — 2011) was one of the last surviving participants of the Surrealist movement. Rebellious and fiercely independent, she had already rejected her wealthy, aristocratic upbringing in favour of an artistic career by the time she first met Max Ernst in 1937.

A follower of his work, she promptly followed him to Paris, where she met and spent two years collaborating with Surrealist artists and the patrons of their work. She also embarked on a relationship with Ernst, where they collaborated and supported each other’s artistic development. Painted shortly before their separation due to the outbreak of war, the portrait of Max Ernst is one of a pair that the couple exchanged in New York after escaping separately from Europe.

In this talk, Patrick Elliot discussed Carrington’s work and the Portrait of Max Ernst, which is the first work by this highly significant artist to enter a Scottish public collection.
