A jumping spider in Mexico has all but given up hunting and switched to eating plant tissue instead. Creation Ministries International says this is a glimpse of the Garden of Eden, a spider remembering what all spiders were like before the fall. I think the actual biology of this spider, and the disagreements among young-earth creationists themselves about whether insects could even die before the fall, tell a very different story.
In this video I walk through the real biology behind Bagheera kiplingi, a jumping spider that has learned to steal protein-rich Beltian bodies from acacia trees instead of catching prey, and then work through Creation Ministries International's article claiming this points back to an originally vegetarian creation. I look at what the article leaves out: that this is one species among many carnivorous relatives, that populations within the very same species range from fully carnivorous to mostly herbivorous, and that the spider's own anatomy is built for eating meat. I also compare this to how Answers in Genesis and Creation Ministries International actually disagree with each other about whether insects and spiders counted as "living" creatures capable of dying before the fall in the first place.
