Playing a rare 1927 Conn F mezzo soprano from the collection of Jonathan Zax, Al McLean is joined on stage by Montreal based trumpeter Lex French. The two musicians are both on instruments that are not their own, French playing an early sterling silver bell Reynolds trumpet dating to 1937.
The two are backed up by drummer Jim Doxas, bassist Adrian Vedady and pianist Pierre Francois. The tune is Ellington's "Take the Coltrane", and we hear solos from everyone, culminating in a rousing drum trade.
