Ordinary Heroes: Noted Canadian music writer Peter Hum shares his talent as a pianist on this new album of 10 original jazz compositions. Here, Hum combines his love of music with powerful social commentary, building tunes around the themes of justice, truth and activism, and sparking the imaginations of listeners. Rendered by an all-star band, these pieces are meant to inspire through a parallel language, and they access a different pathway to our conscience, to sound a rallying cry. All in all, Ordinary Heroes is a refreshing and seldom heard mode of activism... and great music in its own right.
The piece Crises and Reckonings kicks off the album with a jolt, quickly building to a full-band tumult in which the overlapping improvising of saxophonist Kenji Omae and trumpeter David Smith lead the charge. The song is a nod to the feeling of being buffeted by one scandal or controversy or disaster after another.Hopefully through it all there will be positive progress to a better place.
