New York pianists Emmet Cohen shares with us his second featured guest, bassist Ron Carter in Volume 2 of his Masters Legacy Series.
Spanning a career of nearly 60 years, jazz legend Ron carter is widely viewed as the most influential living bassist in the jazz world.
With well over 2000 recordings, Carter is the most recorded bassist in the history of the jazz genre. But, more importantly, he is regarded as a transformative figure in the art form, pioneering the roll of a modern bassist in a small ensemble. Carter's work with Miles Davis (Seven Steps to Heaven, E.S.P.), and other legendary artists such as Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and McCoy Tyner, redefined the roll of the modern bass player. Harmonically dense, intelligent and supremely interactive, Carter was a creative force in the most fertile era in modern jazz, and continues to this day to produce work that is deeply artistic, as well as vast in stylistic range.
In this film, front man Emmet Cohen (Christian McBride, Herlin Riley, Ali Jackson) symbolically defers his role as leader, and places it squarely on Ron Carter. Cohen clearly establishes, in one single question, Carter's pervasive leadership function, whether as the legitimate leader of a session, or the quiet force guiding the band from behind.
Carter's response is both illuminating, and profoundly humble, straddling the awesome valley of being the single most credible jazz bassist, and remaining almost piously generous as a devoted collaborator. In his carefully measured response, we see the true hallmark of leadership: an acceptance of importance, and at the same time a rejection of artifice, and self-aggrandizement.
