To activate Tag Barrel Storage, run through a tag barrel with Hunky Chunky and press Z and C-left when you're about to leave the barrel's hitbox. With good timing, you will gain control outside the tag barrel after a second. You can make the area visible by playing your instrument, but Chunky will stay invisible.
Apparently this has happened to some people before, but Adam Whitmore was the first person to realize and point out that this is a way to activate Tag Barrel Storage.
This method has some interesting side effects that cannot be seen with the damage method. As long as you stay invisible and don't enter any transformation barrels or crates, you can warp to another place on the map by grabbing a climbable object (only stationary objects work, floating vines don't send you anywhere). The warp spot can be changed by playing a cutscenes (e.g. instrument) or grabbing a ledge. Furthermore, oranges and pineapples will appear in the warp spot instead of Chunky's position (this doesn't apply to pineapples in first-person mode), and if you pick up an item, it will be sent to the warp spot. This allows you to create lag, as seen at 7:35.
If you use this trick to warp out of bounds, you will keep your height from before the warp.
The effect will wear off when you...
- undergo a transformation
- take damage (other than fall damage)
- use a cannon
- enter a tag barrel
- switch kongs with a stored tag barrel and stay in the barrel range, or enter the barrel range later on
If you switch kongs with a stored tag barrel and leave the barrel range immediately - use Primate Punch for this because other moves might freeze your kong - you will stay invisible and keep the ability to warp. During such a kong switch, the warp location is set to (0,0,0) - the origin of the map - and climbable objects will send you to (0,Y,0) - Y being the height of the ground you came from.
In a few places, the invisibility allows you to teleport to a higher ground by grabbing a ledge underneath it. After you do this, the warp spot will be constantly alternating between the one from before the ledge grab (in the video that is where I played my instrument at 5:19) and the place where the ledge boost put you. This is why some oranges and pineapples appear on K. Rool's nose and some appear by the tag barrel.
Note: There is a different kind of invisibility that can be aquired with warp pads. It doesn't act the same way, though.
