The shockwave trick is very old, but nobody knew about this side-effect. Under certain conditions, you can load objects into Chunky's hands when he's holding a broken item. This has only been proven to work with tag barrels and vines, as other objects crash the game, undo the ability to swap objects, or do nothing at all.
The general way this works: If a held object breaks before the picking up animation ends, the action of picking it up is buffered until after the shockwave. But since there is no object to pick up anymore, the next object the game loads will try to spawn in Chunky's hands. Not all objects share this behavior, though. Some of them will crash the game, some will appear in their usual location and cancel the object swap, and some won't affect the trick at all.
The crucial part of getting tag barrels or vines into Chunky's hands is the camera movement. The angle and zoom determine what objects around you are loaded. To make things easier when messing around with this, have the camera zoomed all the way in to have as few objects and polygons as possible on screen. Also make sure the object you want to carry isn't already loaded before you do the shockwave trick. Furthermore, try to be somewhat close to it so no other objects interfere with the item swap when you start moving around.
Sometimes, even if it looked like you did everything right and no other objects were unintentionally loaded, the camera may be slightly off and cause the trick to not work. Some objects tend to be loaded from far places (e.g. the Tiny barrel behind the mill is loaded from somewhere in front of the mill).
If you take a tag barrel to a different map where Chunky is supposed to walk a few steps fowards and then pick up the item he is holding, the game will softlock for about five minutes.
