Written in 1916, this collection of miniatures is from Szymanowski's middle period. The musical idiom is a synthesis of late Scriabin, Debussy and orientalism.

1. Presto
2. Andante soave 1:17
3. Vivace assai 2:25
4. Presto 3:11
5. Andante espressivo 4:17
6. Vivace 5:35
7. Allegro molto 6:12
8. Lento assai mesto 6:59
9. Animato 8:23
10. Presto Tempestoso 9:28
11. Andante soave 10:44
12. Presto 12:23

The real gems in the set imho are #9 at the 8:23 mark, and #12 at 12:23. The ending is truly electrifying. Sadly, Szymanowski's music has never really caught on with the general public, but has always fascinated pianists who like a challenge, Richter for one. Boulez has recently (as of 2016) recorded the violin concerto and 3rd symphony, highly recommended!

This performance was created, edited and mastered in Digital Performer (MOTU) using Ivory (Synthogy) sound banks.
