These three very dark pieces, simply titled 1,2 (4:01) and 3 (6:52) were written in 1935 just prior to Prokofiev's return to Russia. Notice the amazing compositional skills in the first piece.
Harlow Robinson:
As their title indicates, the three "Thoughts" are more intellectual and complex than the (Opus 59) Three Pieces. They are, however, notably more simple, less polyphonic and less dense than "Choses en soi" or the "Visions fugitives," to which they bear a strong atmospheric and emotional resemblance. Prokofiev believed that the second of the three "Thoughts"--Lento--was "one of my greatest successes."
Nestyev:
These three short pieces abound in gloomy moods of withdrawal, apathy, and introspection. The noble, plaintive melodies which open the first and third pieces are soon lost in a labyrinth of contrived, arbitrary constructions. The harmonic development is artificially restrained, the melodic design fragmented, and the rhythms amorphous and weak.
