I like to challenge my brain. At the age of 62, I think it’s a good thing! So one of the things I do is see how well I can “multitask” within a groove or pattern. I did several versions of this, one where the right hand moved to different toms for each of the five notes, but I settled on this one, the first one because it has better forward momentum.
Anyway, this pattern is essentially: a 2:3 polyrhythm pattern with the hands (2 in the left; 3 in the right), then plus 2 more notes for a total of 5. Tom lands on Beat 4. I change the right hand to the little tom drum back and forth to the ride to make the pattern more interesting and a little bit more challenging.
