You may have heard of resveratrol (especially when people talk about the health benefits of red wine), so you may have some sort of idea that it has life-extending and energy-giving properties.
I first got into the science behind resveratrol in the land of buttery croissants. The French, who were known for their diets rich in saturated fats, wine, cheese, pastries, and other foods that weren’t traditionally thought of as “health foods”, were also known for having some of the healthiest cardiovascular systems in the westernized world. (This would be called the French Paradox.)
Science pointed to red wine, because of the resveratrol.
That’s why I took the time to explain how to choose the best resveratrol supplement. It can be taken with or without food; If you are trying to lose weight or prevent and/or reverse metabolic syndrome, you can take two doses of Resveratrol daily. A 250 mg supplement daily is recommended (or 500 mg if you are trying to lose weight)
Look for supplements that use whole grape skins to ensure maximum potency. Choose trans-resveratrol, rather than cis-resveratrol, for the more biologically active form of the polyphenol. Supplements should explicitly state “resveratrol”, not “red-wine complex” or some other proprietary formula.
While many foods contain resveratrol, they do not contain high enough levels of resveratrol to have a beneficial effect; therefore, supplementation is recommended!
