Who wants to hear a song about weed??
Did you know this song was copyrighted on March 6th…1934!! It appeared in the film, “Murder at the Vanities” (from the Broadway show of the same name). The film was released right before the infamous “Hays Code” began finally being enforced, in late 1934. The Hays Code was a “morality code” (largely taken verbatim from Christian groups) that censored anything remotely edgy out of Hollywood films.
“Sweet Marijuana” is a song that managed to sneak in right before a bunch of self-righteous pearl-clutchers wreaked havoc on Hollywood. Unfortunately, soon after its name (and lyrics) were changed to “Lotus Blossom.” (Way less fun).
