I can’t believe I’m actually posting this. I never post “rehearsal” videos like this because I like to protect my space to make mistakes without having cameras on me.
One of the realities of modern performance is that you can’t do a public show (or even a private event) without people filming you. Sometimes it’s great to have footage…but sometimes you want to be able to try new things, fall on your face, and not have that be immortalized on the Internet 😂🤦♀️
With that said, I always record every rehearsal - so I can listen back to hear how we can improve. But I like to keep these “how the sausage is made” videos to myself. So sharing this video is VERY uncharacteristic of me.
I decided to do something crazy this week: contact my old voice teacher for a tune-up lesson. I hadn’t seen her in 12 years! She teaches classical technique (opera) - and while I sing constantly….I haven’t been singing opera for a MINUTE. And she is not the kind of teacher who goes easy on you 😬😬
Fun (nerdy) fact about me: I warm up my voice before each show for at least 30 minutes. I’m very ritualistic about it. I do the same warm-ups, in the same order every single time. (Also apologies to the people in hotel rooms next to mine on tour who have to hear that - often at ungodly hours 😂🤪)
The foundations of classical technique are part of why I can sing night after night over a big band without blowing out my voice. The band is super loud behind me. I need to be able to cut over them. Technique helps you sing without having to think about singing (ironically, because you put so much thought into singing beforehand).
Even though I have pretty good technique after studying voice for many years - I’ve noticed certain bad habits creeping in. So I wanted a tune-up.
It was nerve-wracking to take a lesson after many years. But also it was SO helpful. As a Type A lady, I’m bad about asking for help - and even worse at being comfortable revealing my flaws. So if you are like me, this is your sign to ask for help, make mistakes, unlearn bad habits. It’s never too late.
xoxo
