Where we last left off, AiAi had gathered all seven of the OOParts, but Palette’s father, Easel, had swooped in to take them from him and had trapped AiAi and his friends in a cage. The Gala Family finds out Easel’s being corrupted by the OOParts and free the caged monkeys, knowing AiAi’s pureheartedness should help bring Easel back to his senses.
The first location where they pursue Easel is Oceanus, a Greco-Roman temple dedicated to the sea. Unlike the previous seven worlds, this is not a tourist site (despite ancient ruins being popular with tourists, though the hostile weather may be a factor). Accordingly, the travel flyers in the previous worlds have been replaced with an old-timey map of roughly the same dimensions. Behind the stages themselves are more ruins, protected from the elements with dome-shaped force fields, the first sign in this game of the highly advanced technology in the Super Monkey Ball world (well, besides the wormhole portals anyway). Some of them may still be inhabited.
In Greek mythology, Oceanus was the son of the Titans Uranus and Gaia and had dominion over the great river that encircled the world.
I used YanYan here simply because she is the last of the main monkeys I haven’t used. The stages get tougher here; as YanYan is a practiced martial artist, she can handle it, right?
00:24 - 8-01 Stepping Stones
01:49 - 8-02 Holey Road
02:34 - 8-03 Seesaw Jump
04:19 - 8-04 Half-Pipe Cross
05:11 - 8-05 Arch Bridges
06:03 - 8-06 Dividing Road
07:19 - 8-07 Tilt Switch
08:03 - 8-08 Switch Search
10:17 - 8-09 So Many Seesaws
11:06 - 8-10 Scattered Floor
You can see the increased difficulty here in the very first stage, 8-01, Stepping Stones, as you need to make speedy leaps from platform to platform, and the centrifugal force from their spinning makes it difficult to maintain control. In addition, they push you off the platforms below.
8-02, Holey Road, reminds me of Eaten Floor from World 2 of Super Monkey Ball 2. This is by far the easiest stage in this World.
Approaching 8-03, Seesaw Jump, might not be that obvious, but you are supposed to slant the seesaws away from the gap to form a ramp, then use the Spin Dash to cross the gap. Easier said than done.
8-07, Tilt Switch, requires you to press the play button to open a gate that causes the stage to lean forward slowly. You can also see it in the way the balls roll down. The goal moves left and right at the bottom as the stage effectively turns into a pachinko playfield; it’s common to miss the goal by mistake.
The main area in 8-08, Switch Search, requires you to find three play buttons to complete the bridge leading to the goal. The most efficient path, as I realized after clearing this stage, is to fall down the hole at the 12 o’clock position, then turn around and fall towards the play button in the center, then keep going in roughly the same direction (slight right turn) to the third play button. I used the “View Stage” feature to see the play buttons’ locations.
Reaching a pedestal where an OOPart should be located (are there more than seven?), AiAi instead finds a letter from Easel showing that he’s still ahead in the chase. He and his friends continue to give chase, this time to Caelum, the location for World 9. It is a futuristic series of colonies, hidden way up in the clouds.
