The further into a Super Monkey Bal game you go, the more surreal the landscapes get, and Banana Rumble is no exception, with Candy Castle being set near a large stuccture on a hilltop in a land made entirely of sweets. I remember the “desserts land” concept previously used with Super Monkey Ball 3D’s Sweet Fountain, though that was its World 3 and this is World 7, so this bunch is far harder.

The stages, themselves, are also made mostly of candy (though with a few exceptions). In particular, a lot of your traveling surface is made of chocolate, with light green segments suggesting it’s based on Dubai chocolate in particular, a development in the candy scene that was not yet popular enough for Super Monkey Ball 3D to feature. Other sweets include waffles, cupcakes, candy canes, macarons, Maraschino cherries, raspberries, pretzels, cookies, brownies, wafer tubes, non-tube wafers, and cakes with sprinkles, with the snow resembling icing and frosting. (Despite it snowing though, there is no ice cream to be found.) And Pocky sticks. The castle itself looks like a gingerbread house. Other angles here show there are hot air balloons topped with their own frosting, sprinkles, and syrup drizzles, and there is a river leading to a lake that’s brown like melted chocolate.

I chose Doctor for this one because he suggested it, and though I’m not sure why, I kind of associate this World with him. I have him dressed up like a pastry chef. Their stats have nothing to do with why I choose them; I just want to showcase all of the characters. I did mention about using Doctor in World 7, so here it is!

00:25 - 7-01 Two Layers
01:08 - 7-02 Binary Matrix
02:06 - 7-03 Swing Force
02:48 - 7-04 Whipped Cream
03:34 - 7-05 Conveyor Factory
04:32 - 7-06 Swing Bridge
05:21 - 7-07 Gotta Roll Fast
06:01 - 7-08 Seesaw Floor
07:12 - 7-09 Press Machine
07:40 - 7-10 Tilting Road

For 7-01, Two Layers, there is no ramp down to the bottom area, and it would take too long to travel the upper maze AND lower maze normally anyway. You are expected to bounce over and skip segments, and bounce down safely to the lower maze to reach the goal.

Most of 7-02, Binary Matrix, is made up of intermitttently disappearing (but still tangible) giant 1s and 0s. These are not candy-themed (well, they don’t look like it to me). The texture looks more plastic than anything else.

7-04, Whipped Cream, is the next of the “undulating peaks and valleys” stages. This time, the difficulty lies in the narrowness of some areas, as well as there being holes carved out the sides that are hard to see. This one sticks closely to its namesake; the entire stage is a giant floating cake with each “peak” being a dollop of whipped cream.

7-06, Swing Bridge, is not to be confused with Super Monkey Ball 2’s Swing Bridges, which was in Master Extra. While the easiest Master Extra stage, it was still relative and still much harder than this.

7-07, Gotta Roll Fast, might be a reference to Sonic’s own memetic catchphrase of “gotta go fast.” Ironically, I find the safest approach to this stage is to take things easy and watch carefully for the bridges when they reappear to avoid falling into holes.

7-10, Tilting Road, is a stage that requires the Spin Dash without making it obvious. For the last and steepest incline to cross, you need to Spin Dash with the right amount of power and the right angle to both make it across and not fly past the path after it, as it immediately turns left without any guardrails.

Candy Castle, being the seventh world, has the seventh and last OOPart, a basket of desserts with the gemstone on it. It is not as simple as grabbing it though: Easel makes his appearance, Palette’s father and the figure shown in cutscenes here and there (including the short opening for Candy Castle), Like a true villain, Easel can’t help but gloat and monologue to the heroes—unlike a phantom thief, but various characters familiar with him know that he isn’t normally this mean, and Tee of the Gala Family suggests the OOParts have corrupted him. Easel reveals the three remaining locations where the Legendary Banana might be: Oceanus, Caelum, or Astrum (Worlds 8 through 10), all three of which are mostly hidden from the world (and thus not a vacation place like the first seven locations), takes the OOParts with him, and goes off with Palette. Easel traps the other monkeys in a cage, but the Gala Family, concerned for Easel’s wellbeing as they work for him, free them and allow them to pursue Easel. Our first stop is Oceanus, a stormy Greco-Roman temple dedicated to the sea.

There is nothing stopping you from using Palette during the time Easel has kidnapped her.

After that, we’ll have some other videos of various things, and my coverage of Worlds 8 through 10, plus the ending and credits, will resume later.
