So I wanted to try out the famous Super Mario World on the SNES. Unlike the original Super Mario on Nintendo, this one is non-linear : the paths twist, split, or do anything but go straight forward, which adds to the fun factor. There are numerous forks in the road and lots of secret areas. Sometimes there's a hidden area WITHIN another hidden area, so it takes a lot of patience to memorise where you are on the map, or else you get lost. I managed to uncover about 80% of the hidden areas, but I unavoidably missed some, like the "Red Switch Palace". There are also a lot of hidden warps, that warp you all around the map. To add to the challenge factor, many levels will have 2 exits : the regular one, and a hidden exit that uncovers a secret on the map - it's a friggin' labyrinth of warps and paths ! By far the most twisting area is the Forest of Illusions, where in order to progress you actually have to find a secret exit, so it takes hours just to get through this one map, plus you have to avoid dying in the process ! Figuring out where to go next is actually more challenging than fighting Bowser at the end. The game is as challenging as it can get, without being overly difficult. All the problem solving you have to do may seem redundant at first, but it's actually a rewarding experience. Of course, I need to mention that this is Yoshi's first appearance. He's the most awesome sidekick in video game history : he can walk over hazardous areas, crush enemies, and even swallow some of them. He also acts as an extra hit for the player : if you get hit while riding Yoshi, instead of dying or shrinking, you'll be knocked off Yoshi and you can continue. Even better : if you manage to jump back on Yoshi before he runs into a pit, you can mount him again and carry on riding him. Overall the game is awesome - definitely a must have ! Even if you don't have a SNES, get an emulator and play this great game !

Heres my second go at World V, this time with a proper final level. There was really no point in playing the first 3 levels again, but the video wouldve been way too short, so to stall for time, I just sped up the levels that remained unchanged. Level 4 now plays correctly : the one sent to me last time wasnt programmed right, because youd start in the middle of the level right before Bowser. Even so, its very easy to beat him due to the bar at the end of the screen that you can hit like in all of the other levels and win instantly - highly unrewarding for a final boss. The other issues I addressed last time are yet to be solved : the audio, the transparency on the pipes, some typos here and there and the lack of an end screen. Im looking forward to seeing some more improvements, because this world has potential and Id be a pity to abandon the project. Its still on hold so far, so the verdict is postponed until more revision is done.")

Heres a new Mario Forever game made by Crist1919 and Mariovariable3410, titled Mario Forever All Stars. The name is obviously based on Super Mario All Stars on the SNES, which is a collection of several Mario games, including the original sequel to Super Mario Bros. which wasnt released outside of Japan until All Stars came out years later. I couldnt find any real connection between the original SNES game and the MF game by our guys here, other than the name itself, but thats not important...what is important is that Crist and MV teamed up to deliver a great game to add to the collection of MF fan games. However, what stood out with this one was the difficulty ! While it is very well executed in terms of quality, the game starts off way too difficult, way too fast ! By the time you reach the second level, youll be begging for mercy ! The best description of how this game works is something like tons of sh!t flying at you at once: whether its lakitus, bullets, flamethrowers or koopas, everything is in large and over-abundant numbers, making this one of the most difficult games Ive played so far ! It took me quite some time to finally beat it and the fact that I was almost ready to give up at one point should suggest its not made for casual players, so the target audience for this one is limited only to hardcore motherf*ckers.....like me :)) Anyway, see for yourself: a great game in the MF library, but a hard son of a b!tch ! Heres the full walkthrough of Mario Forever Remake by Mariovariable3410. I was really disappointed that this is the same exact game as Mario Forver 4.0, only with some special areas removed, like Goomba Party, Koopa the Devastator and the Hardcore Worlds, so if anything, its actually more uninteresting than the original. It shouldnt even be called remake - its the same game as before, just with some fan-made worlds added to the front end (not exactly what Id call a remake, wouldnt you think ?) ! Technically this is the third time I play through Mario Forever, and for this reason I really didnt feel like giving instructions every step of the way again, so if you want a detailed walkthrough, check out the previous 2 vids listed above. The game is not bad, its just not worthy of being a standalone game, thats what bothers me. Id give it a 5 out of 10, just because its half of the original. Daniel out.")

Fans have told me that a new game based on Mario Forever has been released, and I got overwhelming amounts of requests to play this, so well start with the new stuff thats been added, namely the letter worlds by Mariovariable3410. Other than that, the game has remained largely unchanged : its basically the same game as the first Mario Forever, but with some of the special areas removed, like the Human Laboratory and the Hardcore Worlds, and others added in their place, like the 2 worlds by Syzxchulun which Ive already played, and the new letter worlds by Mariovariable3410. This is what well check out first. There are only 2 of them so far : K and L. I must wonder what happened to all the letters before that ? A bit of trivia here is that that in the Famicom Super Mario Bros. 2, after you complete the 8 worlds, there are 4 additional letter worlds, A,B,C and D, so if those were taken into account, shouldnt these be worlds E and F ? Anyway, thats just not important. What IS important is the gameplay, so what can be said about it ? The controls feel responsive and fluid, like they did in the original Mario Forever, and this is a big thing, because usually the controls end up butchered in fan games, but thats not the case here. The same thing cant be said for the audio however : the biggest issue is that it hasnt been normalized, so on the menu screen the music is so quiet I can barely hear it, but as soon as I step into a level, it gets so loud it blows my eardrums. The same goes for the sound effects : the cannon blasts in particular are so obnoxiously loud that they cover all other sound effects, which is not how it should be - all sounds and soundtracks should be at the same volume to allow playing without having to constantly adjust your speakers. Another thing I ran into, which is shown in the video, is a glitch : in the first level of World K, youll come to a bunch of tall pipes you have to jump on. When you land on them, they fall, which is normal, but what is not normal is that you can actually walk BEHIND them at ground level, which also causes them to fall as if you were on top of them. That wouldnt be so bad, except that when you do walk behind a pipe Mario can no longer jump or duck ! I swear its true : you can mash that jump button all day, but youre not getting out of there, so you have no choice but to reset the game ! Now, Im not a programmer, so I dont know why this happens or what triggers it, but its the first thing that should be taken care of. Other than that, I had no problems. The time limit in each level is a bit too tight, but if you keep moving and dont mess around, its doable. Of course theres the classic not enough checkpoints bullshit of mine, where theres a single checkpoint in the whole level, and whenever you lose all lives, you go back to the beginning. In the long run, save for the glitch, this is a decent little world. In the following videos well check out the rest of the game as well, including World L and the Syzxchulun worlds again, just to see what they look like in this version. Danny Rulez !")

I wasnt really happy with the idea that this level beat me last time, so I wanted to have my revenge ! And so I did: I got to the end, but once again, the cheapness level proved to be too high to actually hit the flag at the end, but at least this time I can show you the rest of the level - in the last video I only made it about half way through. After analyzing the footage from last time, I was able to come up with a strategy and make it to the end - well sort-of. Watch !")

I dont know exactly who made this one, but either way, it still requires a bit of work ! Its pretty ambitious for a Mario Forever fan game, but thats probably the games biggest drawback too, as there are still some things that are unpolished. Gameplay is the most important aspect, so well start with that : the game plays alright up until the third level (the maze one) where you must be small in order to make it through. If youre Super Mario, you wont be able to fit through some of the very narrow spaces, so that is unfair since the level should be beatable regardless of your size. Theres no way to know this the first time playing, so youll just reach a spot where you cant go any further as Super Mario and youll have no choice but to either restart the game or wait for the timer to run out....pretty big thing to fix there, dear creators ! The second problem is the lagging : since the game is pretty big and complex it tends to lag a lot, which isnt so bad in the first levels, but the castle is almost unplayable. It might because of my pretty old system, and if thats the case, then I cant complain, but if its indeed because of the game, then that must be sorted out. Stemming from this lag problem is the ability to pull off some abnormally high jumps, which allows you to bypass entire portions of the level, which shouldnt be possible in the first place. Even if there was something stopping you from flying off screen, youd still have a hard time navigating the level normally, because youd jump really high and with little precision, so you basically have no choice but to just lag-jump your way through the whole castle, which is a complete waste, because its really long and actually looks fun to play, so its a shame they put so much effort into something that doesnt work like it should and can be skipped in a snap ! Graphically speaking, the game is alright. They tried being really original with some background elements in the castle, but its nothing more than just some regular images slapped together side by side with no transitions, so it looks pretty botched and crude overall, thats why I said that the creators probably bit off a little more than they could chew. It looks interesting on paper, and its definitely functional and has potential, but it just requires some more work. It remains in the prototype stage for now. Danny out.")
