Ninja Gaiden is notorious for being one of the best games for the NES, but also one of the hardest, next to Castlevania and Dragon's Lair. Although there are no instant-death hazards, apart from pitfalls, adding to the difficulty is that when an enemy hits you it makes you knocks you back. This constantly puts you in danger of falling down a pit or off a ledge, since there are a lot of them. The jumping controls also take some time getting used to. It's hard to explain unless you play it, but basically you can't speed up while in mid air, so to jump over large gaps you have to be running fast, which means that if you stand on a narrow platform and try to jump over a hole, you're not going to make it because you won't have enough speed. The graphics are awesome for the time, especially since it's one of the few NES games to have cutscenes which give you the motivation to keep playing because you're always anxious to see the story unfolding and the only way to do it is to work your way through the game. The backgrounds are great too - there aren't two screens that look alike and none of the levels have plain boring backgrounds, which gets a thumbs up. The soundtracks are also addicting, my favourite being the one from the mine level (act 4-2). Each level has its own song, so you get plenty of musical variety and keeps the game from getting boring or repetitive. Final verdict: awesome. The fact that the game is insanely difficult doesn't mean it's bad - challenge is a good thing and it keeps you from blowing through the game too quickly. Graphically speaking, the game stands out for the time and it blew other games of the time out of the water, making full use of the NES's graphical capabilities. If the controls were a little less limited and if you didn't get knocked back by enemies all the time, this would be a perfect NES game: great soundtracks, great gameplay, excellent graphics. Try it out ! Use an emulator with save-states if you find it too difficult.
