THE HOLY SPIRIT IS POURED OUT ON THE CHURCH
1. The initial experience of the filling of the Holy Spirit.
The Day of Pentecost: This was a Jewish feast held 50 days after Passover. It celebrated the firstfruits of the wheat harvest.
On the Old Testament Day of Pentecost Israel received the Law; on the New Testament Day of Pentecost the Church received the Spirit of Grace in fullness.
Power come upon the those waiting on the Lord according to the promise of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. They received tongues of fire and spoke to everyone in their own language.
2. Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost.
Peter spoke of the prophesy of Joel.
This introduces the first of three Old Testament passages Peter will quote: Joel 2:28-32, Psalm 16:8-11, and Psalm 110:1.
Peter did not say of that pentecostal enduement, ‘Now is fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet Joel,’ but, more guardedly, ‘This is that which was spoken;’ that is to say, Joel’s words furnish the explanation of this first Pentecost, though this does not finish their fulfillment."
(Acts 2:22-24) Peter introduces the focus of the sermon: The resurrected Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.
(Acts 2:25-33) Quoting Psalm 16, Peter explains the resurrected Jesus.
Peter recognized that though this Psalm spoke of David, it spoke of someone greater than David — the Messiah, Jesus the Christ.
The response to Peter’s preaching.
(Acts 2:37) They respond with a question: What shall we do?
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
Cut to the heart: This is a good way of describing the conviction of the Holy Spirit. They now knew that they were responsible for the death of Jesus (as each of us are), and that they had to repent from this denial of Jesus as the Messiah.
(Acts 2:38-40) Peter invites the multitude to come to Jesus.
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
a. Then Peter said to them: This was in response to the question, “What shall we do? Instead of people wanting to crucify him because of Jesus, thousands of people wanted to trust in Jesus as Lord and Messiah.
b. Repent, and let every one of you be baptized: Responding to the question, “What shall we do? ” Peter gave them something to do. This means that we must do something to be saved, we must do something to follow Jesus; it doesn’t just “happen.”
Repent: They had thought a certain way about Jesus before, considering Him worthy of crucifixion. Now they must turn their thinking around, embracing Jesus as Lord and Messiah.
Repentance must never be thought of as something we must do before we can come back to God. Repentance describes what coming to God is.
Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ:
Baptism made a clear statement. In that day, Jews were not commonly baptized, only Gentiles who wanted to become Jews. For these Jewish men and women to be baptized showed just how strongly they felt they needed Jesus.
“While baptism with water was the expected symbol for conversion, it was not an indispensable criterion for salvation. (Longenecker)
3. (Acts 2:41) The response to Peter’s sermon.
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.
The life of these first believers.
(Acts 2:42) The foundation of their Christian life.
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
The Christian life is meant to be full of fellowship, of sharing one with another.
We share the same Lord Jesus.
We share the same guide for life.
We share the same love of God with love towards God.
We share the same understanding to worship Him.
We share the same struggles.
We share the same victories
We share the same job of living for Him.
We share the same joy of communicating the gospel.
(Acts 2:43) The presence of the power of God.
Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
Then fear came upon every soul: This was evidence of the power of God. One of the greatest, most powerful works God can do is to change the human heart towards a reverent honor of the Lord.
Many signs and wonders were done: This was evidence of the power of God. Where God is at work, lives will be touched in miraculous ways.
4. (Acts 2:46-47) The Christian family lived together and grew.
So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Barnabas and Saul are called and sent by the Holy Spirit
Ministry in the cities of Seleucia, Salamis and Paphos.
(Acts 13:6-7) Meeting the Roman proconsul in Paphos.
Paphos: This city on the west coast of Cyprus was known for its immorality. Here Barnabas and Saul faced a combination of immorality and spiritual darkness that was common across the pagan world of the Roman Empire.
“Paphos was infamous for its worship of Venus, the goddess of [sexual] love” (Barclay). “Athanasius styled its religion ‘the deification of lust.’ Neither men nor women could resort to the shrine of Venus without being defiled in mind and depraved in character.” ( Charles Spurgeon)
(Acts 13:8-12) The resistance of Elymas the sorcerer.
Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated): Paul was opposed by a man named Elymas. His real name was Bar-Jesus (Acts 13:6) which means “son of Jesus, so elymas is the translated name and used because Bar-Jesus was a insult.
(Acts 13:13) From Paphos to Perga.
The sermon at Pisidian Antioch.
1. (Acts 13:14-15) The customary invitation in the synagogue gives Paul an opportunity to preach Jesus.
(Acts 13:16-23) Paul begins his sermon in the synagogue, explaining how God’s work in history leads up to Jesus.
(Acts 13:24-29) Using the examples of John the Baptist and the Jewish rulers, Paul shows how people both received and rejected Jesus.
(Acts 13:30-37) Paul preaches the resurrected Jesus.
(Acts 13:38-41) With a promise and a warning, Paul applies the truth of who Jesus is and what He did for us.
(Acts 13:42-43) Many people, both Jews and Gentiles, express interest in Paul’s message.
(Acts 13:44-45) On the next Sabbath, envy creates opposition.
(Acts 13:46-48) Paul and Barnabas respond to the Jewish opposition.
(Acts 13:49-50) Blessing and opposition.
And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.
(Acts 13:51-52) Paul and Barnabas react to their expulsion from the city of Pisidian Antioch.
But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Sunday Night Bible Study! The acts of the Apostles chapter 13.](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/4I4NCaXFLWs/mqdefault.jpg)
