Penn Rail Videos takes you to a remote part of Oregon to visit the Sumpter Valley Railroad.
In this video, we'll follow the train from McEwen, Oregon to Sumpter and return. The railroad has Mikado 2-8-2 #19 operating for us on this day, and the engine is kept in great shape. We'll even get a glimpse inside the cab of the engine as it makes its way towards Sumpter. After the roundtrip, we'll watch the engine crew put #19 to bed in the McEwen enginehouse.
Sumpter Valley Railroad #19 was built in 1920 for the original Sumpter Valley Railway. In 1940, #19 and sister #20 were sold to the White Pass & Yukon Rwy in Skagway, Alaska. 2-8-2 Mikado #19 was restored to operation in 1996 by a group of volunteers. They also help maintain the railroad's fleet of passenger and freight cars, and the 5+ miles of track on the Sumpter Valley between McEwen, Sumpter, and the yard area.
We would like to thank the Sumpter Valley Railroad for their hospitality and their dedication to preserving railroad history in the state of Oregon.
