The sumo deadlift is one of the best deadlift variations for building the hip strength football players need to accelerate, change direction, and produce force through contact.
The wider stance places a major demand on the glutes, hamstrings, adductors, and entire hip complex while allowing many athletes to maintain a more upright torso position. For football players who are already sprinting, cutting, conditioning, practicing, and taking contact, exercise selection has to build strength without creating unnecessary fatigue.
Football players are not powerlifters. The deadlift is a tool.
A good strength coach selects the variation that develops the qualities the athlete actually needs. Build maximal strength through the hips, manage fatigue, and then teach the athlete to express that strength with speed.
That’s how strength training transfers to the field.
