For any enzyme catalyzed reaction the velocity increases upto Vmax. Once Vmax is reached the velocity becomes independent of the substrate concentration and the graph shows a plateau region. In some special cases, once the Vmax is reached the further increase in substrate decreases the velocity of the reaction, this phenomenon is called substrate inhibition.
