Join me as I head out on a solo winter summit wildcamp in the Lake District. Having finished my 360 digger training, and passed my exams I got an early finish, I'd packed my rucksack the night before just in case of this opportunity, I drove straight out to Bassenthwaite, parked up, and started the steep ascent through Dodd Wood, and eventually to Dodd summit. I'd packed the OEX Phoxx + ultralight summer trekking tent to see how it would handle winter conditions. I quickly entered the snow layer, and the path was very slippery, the wood was beautiful covered in snow, and was very atmospheric. Once the main part of the Ascent was over I turned a corner and was met with a beautiful view over Keswick and Derwent Water, after a quick rest there I pushed on to the summit. At the top I was truly taken aback by the views, Keswick, Derwent Water, Bassenthwaite Lake as well as the surrounding mountains covered in snow, and bathed in winter sunshine, it was just simply stunning. The sun was starting to set, so I set up my tent as quickly as possible, the ground was frozen solid, so getting the pegs in was difficult, and I had to bang them in with a rock. With the tent set up, I sat back and enjoyed one of the best sunsets I've ever seen whilst enjoying my camp food. It was soon dark, so I got in my small tent for a long cold night, temperatures dipped down to minus 8 Celsius, but my sleep system kept me toasty warm. I woke early, and the moon was reflected in Derwent Water, but it was too cold too get up just yet, so I zipped my tent and sleeping bag back up to keep warm. By now I was starting to suffer with the lack of space inside the tent, I'd been in there for a long time, my hips and back were aching, and my legs were cramped. I eventually got breakfast and a coffee on, and got out of the tent to an absolutely amazing sunrise, the colours were so unbelievable they even looked fake! I packed up, bending 4 tent pegs and even snapping 1! Packed my rubbish with me ensuring I left no trace. The OEX Phoxx + ultralight did surprisingly well, but i definitely missed the space that my bigger tents have.
