Strongpoint Lungenkraut in Equihen-Plage was the site of an advanced German radio long-range navigation system called Erika. It provided a guidance system for the Luftwaffe night bombers. The system turned out to be vulnerable to jamming. The site was used between 1942 and 1944.
Erika was the final radio guidance system developed by the Germans. By the time the Germans had perfected the system of radio guidance the Germans had lost the battle for air superiority and were flying very few bombing raids over England.
By late 1943 most of these stations had been converted to house radar sets of various types. Because the radio guidance stations were among the first bunkers constructed by the Germans in France, they were of a much higher standard than many of the later German fortifications.
Erika provided Germans bombers a navigation system for long distances. On 2 different frequencies tones were simultanious transmitted and the plane carried equipment to calculate the position with an accuracy of 400 meters. Stations were built in Equihen and in St Pierre Eglise.
