Meet the Inquisitor. The latest output of the Order's military research. The hulking mecha uses a similar plating to Crusaders but with further enhancements. It is not only extremely resistant to bullets but also to explosives meaning, that rockets and grenades are much less effective. The best way to combat Inquisitors is a well aimed energy blast from the Mauler's secondary attack or simply taking them out with the Sigil. Inquisitors are equipped with a pretty accurate and rapid firing grenade launcher and an arm cannon they use in close combat. However, due to their plating, they actually do not need to as they take no damage from their own grenades. Lastly, the Inquisitor has some kind of propulsion system that allows it to fly thus giving it unparalleled mobility compared to other enemies.
The Front can be glad that the Order never deployed even one Inquisitor against them due to how new and very few of them there are.
Curiously, it is the only DOOM engine enemy that can switch between flying and walking states at will. All other enemies have one or the other. In the original version this also came with a couple of bugs.
The little backstory told by Master Smithy was added with the Veteran Edition to make a bit more sense out of the situation but I think it was always apparent that the "comet" crash brought whatever evil the hero is facing.
I swear there is a school of map design with only two entries. Strife and Dark Forces.
