The Enterprise is held up by a curious anomaly, a "hole in space" that appears to contradict numerous established laws of physics. This minor curiosity soon turns into a genuine threat when this region expands around the Enterprise, trapping the starship presenting no avenue of escape.
With the Enterprise now lost in this hole in space, the bridge crew struggle to make sense of the contradictions the ship's sensors are reporting. Doctor Kathryn Pulaski is granted an opportunity to participate in the cross-checks with the ships equipment and examines the local space, with the assistance of Commander Data. Unsatisfied with her observations, Pulaski finds herself inclined to question Data's competence.
