Episode: "Loud As a Whisper"
A global conflict on planet Solais V has reached crisis point which could see the annhilation of both sides. The Enterprise has been assigned to transport Riva, a high profile mediator to Solais in the hopes he can negotiate a lasting peace between them.
A surprising aspect to Riva is that he is actually deaf, despite which he is always supported by three individuals that serve as his "chorus"; a trio whose minds are so finely tuned to Rivas that they are capable of interpreting his thoughts and presenting his speech for him.
During his introductions to the Enterprise bridge crew, Riva meets Geordi LaForge and is instantly curious about his VISOR. Geordi reveals that despite having been born blind, he's long since made his peace with it.
It's memorable to me that we have a character who openly admits that he likes who he is (make that "really" likes who he is) despite him having had to deal with a disability all his life. Not only that, he's proud to have not allowed that disability to get in the way of his ambitions.
I don't have a disability but I at least have tried to be somebody I can actually like.
