Sri Lankans have elected Marxist-leaning Anura Kumara Dissanayake as their new president. The South Asian nation’s Election Commission announced on September 22, 2024, that Dissanayake beat incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa. The result signalled that voters were won over by his pledge to fight corruption and bolster a fragile economic recovery following Sri Lanka’s worst financial crisis in decades.
