Russia started a mass-scale vaccination of the population against COVID-19 using the viral vector vaccine Sputnik V. Let's take a look at how it differs from its Western counterparts, in what areas it surpasses them, and why it seems so controversial
Sputnik V is the first registered vaccine against COVID-19. It was registered by Russian Ministry of Health in August of 2020 and now it is finally ready for a public use. But is it actually? Stage 3 trials are still not finished and won't be finished until May of 2021. Still, the developers of the vaccine assure that it is so effective and safe (based on preliminary results) that it is possible to start vaccination right now. The state-run Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow that developed Sputnik V said the data was obtained 21 days after volunteers received the first dose of the two-shot vaccine and the final effectiveness of the vaccine is 91.4%.
Sputnik V, developed in Russia, has provoked scepticism both at home and abroad after it was hastily approved by the government before the start of large-scale Phase 3 trials. In September, scientists from several countries signed a note expressing concern about possible data manipulation and statistical anomalies in the Phase 1/2 data published in the medical journal The Lancet. Its developers defended their research, stating that the methods they used to obtain the measurements only gave approximate values, not accurate figures.
