This is the third remix in my Pokémon Gold & Silver music arrangement series. Welcome to Sprout Tower!

I wanted to mess with expectations on this one. I began by choosing the obvious musical flavour for this arrangement - Japanese - and to be honest I felt it needed something more. As beautiful as this style of music is, I felt that sticking to traditional Japanese music was a bit safe. I almost chose the safe option, but felt that in order to grow as a composer I needed to break the mold, even just a little. That's when I decided to introduce some vintage-sounding synth.

Why synth? Well, I've been watching a few horror movies recently and I've really enjoyed the soundtracks to them, in particular Disasterpiece's It Follows score. It just gave me this really nostalgic, twisted kind of feeling. I felt as if I could get away with incorporating this sound into a Gold and Silver arrangement because, to me, the game has a really strange atmosphere unlike any other game in the series.

I was just a youngen when Pokémon Gold & Silver came out here in the UK. At that point, the Pokémon franchise had been around for a couple of years and was really ingrained into every boy and girls' mind. Everyone was familiar with the likes of Pikachu, Bulbabsaur, Ash, Team Rocket etc. Whether it was the Gameboy game, the trading cards, the TV show, everyone just *knew* Pokémon. It was part of the furniture, part of youth culture.
Then information on the newest games, Gold & Silver, started to appear in gaming magazines. I remember seeing those early Sugimori illustrations of Sunkern, Houndoor, Igglybuff. I thought, hey these aren't my Pokémon, they're freaks! And the images of the new trainer and rival...something felt really off about them, something uncanny.

I remember first playing the game on an emulator that my IT teacher had (probably illegally) given me. It was a horrible fan-translation, nothing made sense. As a young boy, using a computer and the internet in its infancy, this game made an impression on me, and it wasn't good. It made me feel uncomfortable, and I can't really pinpoint it other than everything in the game felt uncanny. I get really nostalgic thinking of Pokémon Gold and Silver, moreso than Red and Blue, but it's not a nice feeling of nostalgia. Like how I described the It Follows music, it's a twisted nostalgia. Even now, everything about the game creeps me out a bit.

So that's why I decided to introduce some synth amongst the traditional Japanese instruments. Does it work? I'm not sure. But I hope it embodies the creepy, weird feeling that resides in the Gold and Silver games. And Bellsprout. I mean just look at its face, it knows something, man.

Hope you enjoy this one! Check out my other Gold & Silver arrangements (they're a bit old now):
