Hello! To celebrate the launch day of Hearthstone's newest expansion - Knights of the Frozen Throne - I've composed a piece of music inspired by Peter McConnell's soundtrack for Hearthstone!
I very much had the theme of the new expansion in mind for this piece. The music we hear on the game board as we play tends to suit the expansion/card set in which it was released. For instance, the board for the Blackrock Mountain adventure has a very "underground" sound, with the anvil-like percussion and deep aggressive woodwind; One Night in Karazhan featured a disco-like tone to the music, whilst retaining that feeling of being in the Inn playing cards. I decided to continue this approach with my music, trying to replicate that feel of this new expansion's theme along with the familiar sound of Hearthstone's whimsical score. (I realise KFT has its own music already, but I wanted to attempt my own take on it ;) )
For my KFT-inspired piece I tried to give it a sense of foreboding and menace to represent the Lich King himself, as well as bringing in influences from the Northrend region. The original Wrath of the Lich King has an outstanding soundtrack, and I just had to incorporate some uilleann pipes into my piece just as WotLK's music did. This should really give a sense of the cold, mountainous landscapes that we are all familiar with. Of course, it still needs to sound like a jaunty little piece being played by a band in an Inn filled with drunken card-players, as that's what Hearthstone's music tends to encompass.
