Spouter’s Shoulder Geyser
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.
Spouter’s Shoulder Geyser is a small “side vent” next to Spouter Geyser in the Black Sand Basin of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. Spouter Geyser is a fountain-type geyser with a subcircular basin about 7 by 8 meters in size. Bright white geyserite covers the basin floor and consists in part of low to moderately low mounded, closely-packed columnar geyserite masses. The centrally-located vent is irregular in shape and about 0.5 by 1 meter in size. Eruptions are frequent and usually one to two hours in duration. True intervals (= eruption end to next eruption start) are about two hours. Partial fill-and-drain events often precede eruptions. Two principal runoff channels exist - one drains water westward to Iron Spring Creek and the other drains to the north toward Opalescent Pool, then heads west toward the creek.
Spouter’s Shoulder Geyser is located about 7 meters ~south of Spouter Geyser’s central vent. It erupts from two vents, starting about two to four minutes after the commencement of a Spouter eruption and stopping when Spouter eruptions end. Spouter’s Shoulder can have spitting and subterranean grumbling well before actual eruptions begin.
