Flood Geyser (2015)
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.
Flood Geyser is a fountain-type geyser in the Flood Group of Yellowstone’s Midway Geyser Basin. It sits just on the northern bank of a meander of the Firehole River, just south of Circle Pool. Flood Geyser’s pool is about 5 by 4 meters in size. An irregularly low-mounded platform of geyserite surrounds the pool. Splash pools partly surround the geyserite platform. Two principal eruption runoff channels drain southward and westward into the Firehole River.
Eruptions of Flood Geyser are preceded by overflow, roiling, and low splashing in the pool, with some larger, spaced bursts. Eruptions last from about 2.5 minutes to 14 minutes and consist of moderately large, wide, heavy splashing. Water drains from the pool within a minute after eruptive activity ceases. Pool refilling occurs about 6 to 7 minutes after the end of an eruption. Reported intervals (= eruption start to eruption start) range from 47 to 86 minutes - many are 50 to 60 minutes.
In 1998, researchers measured Flood Geyser’s water temperature at 92 degrees Celsius, with a pH of 8.1 (slightly alkaline).
